Projects like Orphaleena usually start with a Design Brief, which is basically a written explanation or outline of the goals, objectives and schedule of a design project. It includes the target audience, a budget, required supplies and the overall style of what is produced. I had provided artwork for publications according to a brief before, but not so with Orphaleena. Many a time Sara and I didn’t have a clue – we really did not know how to go about putting together an illustrated book! We did have enough freedom, knowledgeable contacts and time to learn how to go about it, though, and so we created the brief as we went along. Because of this, I was able to be a part of the conceptualization and design of the project as it developed. 2015 was basically a year of establishing a framework for the story, which Sara had to write out and have edited. This is what I wrote in September of 2015:
“…I am working on samples of ways I can illustrate your story…let me know what ideas you have in your head, like for instance, do you have an image of how you picture Orphalina? Also, I am wondering if you want it in full colour like a watercolour painting or black outline so that it can be printed in one colour?”
(I didn’t even know how to spell Orphaleena yet!) From that point on the pieces started fitting together and we possessed enough confidence to keep moving forward.
Looking back it makes me happy that we didn’t have it all together. Our world is so sophisticated and ‘polished’ now; I personally find it refreshing that two people like Sara and me could accomplish something like Orphaleena. Sometimes we don’t need to have it all together to achieve success. When we talk about faith, do we really believe God cares about our dreams and will provide for us in our ignorance? Can we actually rely on the Creator of the Universe to help us find ways to reach goals? Can we face the future with joy instead of fear because of Him who works things together for good? Can we experience peace in the storm? Yes, it’s possible, and when we start with nothing to very little, like a child, it is easier to ask for help. And when we are a child of the King, we can expect big-time help.
